Tuesday 12th

Jacko, our acting teacher, worked with us where we completed several exercises that would help us with channelling our characters. A key exercise we did with him was that we needed to make up a day in our head that we think has happened in our characters life. For my character, Val, I chose the day that Val did a parade in the rain for Louella Heiner (as stated in my monologue). The importance of this exercise was that it allows us to fully get into the head of our character as we thought about our characters purpose. We thought about every detail of the day we chose in our heads down to what breakfast they had, what they wore, how they travelled in the day etc. It gives us as an actor an insight to what we think our characters are like. It gives our character more depth which should in turn develop our characterisation.

Thursday 14th

For this rehearsal, we did a tech run of the show. This means that we ran the show from start to finish but we had lighting and  used our mics for the first time. Before we did that, we had our Health and Safety talk from our Head Technician, Anthony. He talked us through the hazards that we could come across on stage in terms of wires backstage, the lights placed at the edge of the wings that get very hot, curtains in the wings, the dance floor that was especially put in for the show and the added platform stage that the mirrors were on top of. This talk was crucial for us to have to unsure the safety of all the cast. Once we had our Health and Safety discussion we were allowed to spend time having a walk around our stage and get a feel of the space. I used this opportunity to test out my trainers and trainer socks on the new dance floor material to see if I would still be able to have an equal balance of grip and slip that I was used to with our rehearsal space floor. As I tried it out, our new dance floor didn’t interfere with my shoes and my trainer socks so I don’t think this floor is going to affect me in anyway.

After our stage walk-through, we then got ready to put our mic headsets, mic packs and belts on before we began our run-through. We then got into a line ready for a soundcheck to make sure everything was at the right level and that it was all in working order. Once we did that we began the run-through. We came across a few challenges during our run. The main challenge was spacing. As we were now on the stage, we found spacing difficult as we were used to our rehearsal space. Our stage is smaller than what we had to rehearse in so we are too used to being more spread out. Overall, I think the run-through went pretty well. I do think we just need to up the energy and push it further a lot more with our faces and have more energy in our movements. We’ve go the choreography down but we just need to add more energy.

In terms of my number and monologue, I think it went very well. I feel that I have pushed it even more. As we were in costume in yesterday’s rehearsal, I feel that I am able to express my character more once I’m in the costume. I feel that in our run-through for this rehearsal I held on to that characterisation of when I was in costume which ultimately really helped.

The biggest thing we need to sort out is spacing which is something we can work on in Friday’s rehearsal when we finalise the tech for the show on Friday.

Friday 15th

Today’s all day rehearsal consisted of us dong a run-through in costume but we were stop-starting so that the show could be fully programmed so that the lights were in the right places and so that we had the correct lighting in order to set the mood of each number/scene. We also had a flash mob to help promote the show and get more ticket sales.
